Students wish you a very happy nude year...

FEARLESS students at The University of Salford students have stripped off to raise money for charity.

Salford Receive and Give (RAG) teamed up with local charity Henshaws Society for Blind People to raise vital funds for the charity's pioneering work with local blind and visually impaired people.

Members of the university's numerous clubs and societies braved the cold to get snapped with strategically placed items covering their modesty.

Now in its third year, it is the first time that Salford Students Stripped has been produced in partnership with a charity.

The naked truth about teaching the art of the nude

The famous nude drawing Vitruvian Man did not spring from the baby Leonardo DaVinci. Neither did Matisse just dial up Blue Nude, nor did Botticelli start his career with Birth of Venus.

Let's face it, everyone knows how to look at naked people and at the paintings of beautiful, intriguing or shocking nudes, especially when they're in museums and galleries and big-deal shows, such as Nude 2009, the 23rd year of the Nude International, starting this week in Lexington.

But who teaches these artists to paint the nude human figure?

To paint the nude form, you have to really look at it. You first have to get beyond the whole giggly thing, sure, but there is so much more to know about light, proportion and color before you're able to work your vision, make your statement, impose your innovative post-Spencer Tunick concept on it.

Or is there?

Nile's topless ban fails to take off

The New South Wales Government and Opposition say they will not be heeding the Reverend Fred Nile's call for a vote to ban topless sunbathing.

The New South Wales Government and Opposition say they will not be heeding the Reverend Fred Nile's call for a vote to ban topless sunbathing.

The acting Premier Carmel Tebbutt says she does not support a ban.

"Commonsense should prevail," she said.

"We have had topless sunbathing on beaches in NSW for quite some time now."

"I think the real issue is we want people to take some care in the sun, and topless sunbathing or any sort of sunbathing does expose you to a risk of melanoma.

"I'd just say to people, cover up and get out of the sun because you don't want to place yourself at risk of sun cancers."

The Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell says topless sunbathing is a third rate political issue that does not warrant the State Parliament's attention.

Letting it all hang out at the naturist festival

Reading's easy, but naturist Pos Chute is more than willing to tackle more tricky activities in the buff.

Asked if there was anything he wouldn't do, he said: "Maybe ice-caving," then quickly retracted. "Oh nah, I'd probably give that a go."

Mr Chute, 32, an air force engineer, of Palmerston North, was among more than 130 other naturists or nudists who descended on Te Marua, Upper Hutt, for the 57th national festival of the Naturist Federation.

The week-long event, which started on Sunday, has attracted sun-lovers from as far away as Britain and Germany to the park-like camp at the foot of the Rimutaka Range.

Wellington Naturist Club president Ken Mercer said the warm weather was playing a big part in the success of the event, which includes team games, miniten a form of tennis and petanque. His wife, Judith, said many non-nudists had misconceptions about naturist camps. "They just don't know what to expect."

June Campbell-Tong, of Whitby, has been a passionate supporter of nudity for 45 years. "It's beautiful, it's wonderful," she said. "I can't wait to come out here it's a stress release. People can come here and forget the outside world."

She said that, in today's busy world, people could forget to relax, and becoming a naturist could help to solve a lot of the stress involved with tough economic times.

Brevard naturists

For 33 years, Ursula Dickens has traveled to the northernmost area of Playalinda Beach, where she enjoys the most natural stretch of Florida seashore in her most natural attire.

During those decades, five citations have not stopped the 68-year-old former bed and breakfast owner from sunbathing in the nude.

"It's just a matter of freedom to the mind and the body," she said.

But now Dickens and scores of "naturists" who visit Playalinda's last northern access point -- historically, but not officially, known as clothing-optional -- could find themselves facing possible fines and arrest after an increase in complaints about nudity.
